Female Agni Figurine, Republic Of Côte D’ivoire.

Beautiful standing female statuette

Wood, original brown patina, thread, coral, and small multicolored beads; signs of wear; chips on the base and at the tip of one breast.

Agni, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. Early 20th century

Dimensions: 23.5 × 10 cm.

This young woman stands with her arms outstretched from her body. Her rounded belly and ringed neck lend a gentle fullness to her silhouette. Scarification marks accentuate her youthful face, with its alert gaze, framed by a hairstyle of braids coiled into small buns.

Related to the Akan, the Agni are settled primarily in eastern Côte d’Ivoire. This figure may have been associated with the practices of the Komian, who served as intermediaries with the spirits; her ringed neck evokes an Akan ideal of beauty and prosperity.
