Bronze Bust Of Jean Racine, After Louis-simon Boizot, 19th Century
Artist: Louis-simon Boizot 1743-1809
Bronze bust with a nuanced brown patina depicting the famous French playwright and poet of the Grand Siècle, Jean Racine (1639–1699), based on a work by Louis Simon Boizot (1743–1809). The subject is faithfully rendered based on the model created in 1779 by the King’s sculptor, Louis-Simon Boizot (1743–1809), which was originally intended to adorn the foyer of the Comédie-Française. In keeping with this classical iconography, Racine is depicted with an expressive face turned three-quarters to his left. He wears the traditional and imposing Louis XIV-style wig with generous, deeply chiseled curls. His shoulders are draped in a coat covering a half-open shirt with a gathered front panel, tied with a drape of soft fabric.
The sculpture rests on a bronze pedestal, which in turn is mounted on a beautiful cylindrical pedestal made of beige veined onyx with translucent hues. The entire piece rests on a square base of dark gray marble.
Good condition, warm patina.
