Set Of Four Antique Eastern Orthodox Religious Icons | Modern Decorative

Artist: Unknown At Present
Description
A collection of four antique Eastern Orthodox devotional icons, each depicting a different religious figure and displaying the traditional iconographic techniques associated with Eastern Christian religious art.

The collection comprises three painted wooden panels and one smaller icon featuring a decorative embossed silver-tone metal oklad (revetment), framing the painted face and hands of the saint.

The four icons display distinctive characteristics, including traditional ecclesiastical garments, gilded halos, Cyrillic and Greek inscriptions, and beautifully aged painted surfaces. Their varied dimensions and finishes make them particularly appealing when displayed together as a collection.

The paintings retain their historical character, with visible patination, surface wear and evidence of age.

Individual Icons

1. Top Left – Saint Paraskeva

Dimensions: 22 × 15.5 cm

Front: Painted representation of Saint Paraskeva, wearing a red mantle over blue garments, holding a cross and a decorative vessel. A gilded halo contrasts with the vivid green background. Greek lettering appears across the upper section.

Back: Dark, aged wooden panel with visible grain, patination, surface irregularities and evidence of historic wear.

2. Top Right – Saint Dionysius

Dimensions: 29 × 22 cm

Front: A full-length representation of Saint Dionysius, depicted as a bearded ecclesiastical figure wearing traditional episcopal vestments. He raises his right hand in blessing while holding a religious book in his left. Greek inscriptions identify the saint.

Back: Wooden panel with horizontal supporting battens, old handwritten inscriptions and a hanging fitting.

3. Bottom Left – Saint Alexander Nevsky

Dimensions: 31.5 × 26.25 cm

Front: A painted depiction of Saint Alexander Nevsky, shown standing in traditional dress and holding a religious banner bearing the image of Christ. A halo surrounds his head, with Cyrillic lettering above. The composition incorporates muted earthy tones, red and green garments, and a restrained architectural background.

Back: Wooden panel with old handwritten Cyrillic inscriptions and supporting battens.

4. Bottom Right – Saint Nicholas

Dimensions: 13.5 × 11 cm

Front: A compact icon of Saint Nicholas, featuring a painted face and hands surrounded by an elaborate embossed silver-tone metal oklad. The decorative covering incorporates a radiating halo, ornate episcopal crown, ecclesiastical robes and a religious book.

Back: Fabric-covered reverse showing age-related discolouration, wear and historic stitching or repairs along the upper edge.

Condition
Attractive antique condition, retaining the character and patination associated with devotional objects of this age.

The painted panels exhibit varying degrees of surface wear, craquelure, minor paint losses, scratches and edge wear. The Saint Paraskeva icon displays more pronounced ageing and losses to the gilded decoration, while the Saint Alexander Nevsky panel retains its original visual character despite scattered paint losses and surface abrasions.

The Saint Dionysius icon shows areas of paint loss, particularly along the lower edge. The smaller Saint Nicholas icon retains its decorative metal covering, with visible tarnishing, rubbing and surface wear.

The reverse of each icon has been photographed, showing the original construction, aged surfaces and historic inscriptions where present.

Please refer to the accompanying photographs, which form part of the condition report.
