Chair Modeled After Hetsch, Denmark, Circa 1800

Artist: After Gustav Friedrich Hetsch

Chair based on a design by Hetsch
Painted wood and rattan seat. Original paint.
Denmark, circa 1800

Height 82 cm, width 47.5 cm, depth 43 cm. Seat height 46.5 cm.

Danish chair in black-painted wood, dating from around 1800 and designed after a model attributed to Gustav Friedrich Hetsch (1788–1864). It features a light frame with slender proportions, including an openwork backrest formed by slightly curved uprights, a central crossbar, and a turned upper handle. The turned front legs contrast with the straight rear legs, which extend upward to form the uprights of the backrest. The seat has retained its cane work, which lends the piece a sense of visual lightness and reflects the functional nature of this type of furniture.

The decoration is concentrated in certain areas of the structure and stands out against the black background thanks to motifs painted in golden tones. The backrest features a symmetrical composition centered on a rosette set within a circular medallion, flanked by volutes and stylized plant motifs. Similar ornamental motifs also appear on the front crossbar of the seat and on the blocks above the front legs, while fine lines accentuate certain contours of the structure. The upper handle is also adorned with a simple geometric diamond pattern.

The chair has retained its original painted decoration, a particularly important feature that allows one to fully appreciate both its ornamentation and its historical character. This design is associated with the work of Gustav Friedrich Hetsch, a German-born architect and designer whose career was closely linked to the development of Danish Neoclassicism. The combination of a refined silhouette, turned elements, classically inspired ornamentation, and understated applied decoration is representative of the taste that prevailed in Denmark during the early decades of the 19th century.
