Gustavian Console Table With Corinthian-style Legs, Sweden

Console Table on four Corinthian-style legs
Birch and blackened wood
Sweden, circa 1820

Height 76 cm, width 74 cm, depth 44 cm

Rectangular birch console table featuring a very pronounced flamed grain, visible across the entire frieze and lower crossbars.

The tabletop consists of a distinct upper section made of blackened wood, with a smooth, reflective surface, framed by a mitered edge that highlights the contrast between the light wood and the black horizontal band beneath the tabletop. The console rests on four cylindrical columns of blackened wood, topped with Corinthian-style capitals in gilded brass, adorned with leaves and scrolls modeled in relief, and finished at the base with circular rings of the same metal. In the lower section, a double crossed arch combines sections of blackened wood and birch, meeting at the center with a black cubic block adorned with a circular floral brass appliqué. Exposed dovetail joints are visible on the sides of the tabletop, and the entire piece highlights the natural variations in the birch wood, protected by a uniform glossy finish.

The console table was designed as an accent or display piece, built around a highly refined architectural language. Its construction is distinguished by the precision of the dovetail joints, the uniform curvature of the lower crossbars, and the way the columns are integrated using gilded brass hardware and capitals that visually and structurally unify the joints. The combination of blackened surfaces and flamed birch, along with the raised top, reflects a design intended to enhance visual depth and chromatic contrast. The brass elements feature a polished yet understated ornamentation, characteristic of furniture crafted with attention to detail and a balance between sturdiness and refinement.

This piece belongs to the late Gustavian style, which prevailed in Sweden during the final decades of the 18th century and the early years of the 19th, before the emergence of the Nordic Empire style. Although it retains architectural elements derived from the classical French style, such as the dark columns and gilded Corinthian capitals, its overall design reflects the Gustavian sensibility: clean lines, the luminosity of local materials, and understated ornamentation. The choice of flamed birch combined with blackened surfaces, along with the simplicity of the composition, places it at the crossroads between the Neoclassicism promoted under Gustav III and the more monumental forms that would characterize the following period. This balance between classical references and Nordic clarity defines its place within the late Gustavian style.
