A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Boggs was later strongly influenced by Eugène Boudin. His style thus blends realism and Impressionism. He exhibited for many years at the Salon and won a silver medal at the 1889 World’s Fair.
Bustling markets and harbors were the most popular subjects in his work, particularly in Paris and Normandy. In 1885, he exhibited a painting titled “La Houle à Honfleur” in New York; the work is now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Boggs’ oil paintings are rare, as the artist produced many watercolors. In this canvas, rendered with great finesse, the depiction of the water and its reflections is particularly successful. The sails are brought to life through dynamic brushstrokes, particularly those of the central sailboat. Small touches of red enhance the composition, while the light falls precisely on the sailor’s cap.
