Art Nouveau Pewter Vase By Pommi, Signed By Charles Théodore Perron (1862–1934), With A Feminine Design
It was designed entirely by the renowned French sculptor Charles Théodore Perron (1862–1934).
The piece is distinguished by its rich high-relief decoration, depicting a dreamlike, allegorical, and mythological world characteristic of the Belle Époque.
The rounded, luminous body is delicately engraved with a large crescent moon emerging from stylized clouds in light, swirling volutes.
Blooming roses in relief complete this nocturnal and poetic scene on the metallic surface.
On the upper rim of the vessel, a finely detailed quiver filled with arrows is applied with great technical precision.
The sculptural treatment of the structural elements attests to the artist’s exceptional sculptural genius.
The main handle is beautifully formed by a gracefully curved, nude female figure.
This draped nymph appears suspended in midair, perfectly hugging the curves of the vase’s undulating neck.
Opposite this figure, a winged putto—or cupid—playfully climbs along the sinuous, undulating rim.
At the base of the vase, a second reclining female figure emerges from waves of water or vigorously textured rock formations.
This dynamic composition anchors the piece in a fluid, organic, and distinctly aquatic aesthetic.
The artist’s signature, “Ch. Perron,” is clearly incised on the lower part of the polished body.
From a technical standpoint, a minute original firing flaw is visible just above the winged angel’s arm.
This precious testament to period craftsmanship in no way compromises the piece’s structural integrity or aesthetic harmony.
This collector’s vase boasts superb decorative proportions to enhance a refined interior.
Its generous dimensions are 36 cm in height and a maximum width of 26.5 cm.
About the artist:
Charles Théodore Perron (1862–1934) Born in Paris, Charles Théodore Perron was a leading French sculptor and medalist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the guidance of illustrious masters such as Jules Félix Coutan.
Perron exhibited regularly at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1895.
There he received numerous official awards, including an honorable mention in 1896, a third-class medal in 1897, and a second-class medal in 1899.
At the famous 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, his works captivated the public and earned him a well-deserved bronze medal.
The artist is particularly famous for his bronze and marble sculptures and his decorative art objects made of fine pewter.
His favorite subjects include allegorical figures, genre scenes, and magnificent female nudes characterized by supple, sinuous lines.
Through his work with pewter, Perron captured the very essence of Art Nouveau by transforming utilitarian objects into true sculptural works of art.
His pieces capture light in a unique way through subtle interplay between polished surfaces and heavily textured areas.
Today, his works are highly sought after by international collectors and are held in several public collections and museums.
This vase is an excellent investment for collectors of Belle Époque antiques.
