Antonio CARENA (1925–2010) Rivoli “Ciel” Acrylic on canvas, signed on the back, 50 x 100 cm Italian
Antonio Carena, born in Rivoli in 1925 and who died in 2010, began his artistic career after graduating from the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied painting under Enrico Paulucci and Mauro Davico. His artistic practice stood out from the very beginning, marked by his participation in major events such as the 25th Venice Biennale and the receipt of national awards.Carena explored a variety of materials and techniques, notably using airbrushes to create skies, as well as working with sheet metal, plastics, marquisette, canvas, Plexiglas, and wood. His artistic research has focused on a visual approach he has defined as “functional skyism,” a way of representing the sky that is not limited to naturalism but presents itself as a romantic and conceptual endeavor.Throughout his career, he taught figure drawing at the Cottini Art High School in Turin and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cuneo, contributing to the training of new generations of artists. His works have been featured in group exhibitions alongside those of renowned international artists, solidifying his presence in the contemporary art scene.Through the series “Cielo-quanto-ti-amo,” Carena has transformed architectural spaces in various cities—including Rome, Geneva, Rivoli, Turin, and Paris—breathing new life into ceilings and walls through his artistic vision. His work is characterized by a balance between technique and poetry, offering a visual experience that combines aesthetics and reflection.
