Russian Cavalrymen On Winter Patrol
A splendid oil painting on Bristol board depicting two cavalrymen of the Russian Imperial Army on patrol in a snow-covered landscape, illuminated by the warm glow of the sunset. In the distance, a column of cavalry can be seen advancing. The artist, a master of the military genre, masterfully plays with the chromatic contrasts between the bluish shadow of the snow and the orange-tinged highlights of the sunlight. The work stands out for its rapid, vibrant brushwork, rich in atmosphere.
Viktor Vikent’evič Mazurovskij (1859–1944) was one of the most renowned battle painters of Polish and Russian origin. After studying at the Warsaw School of Drawing and the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, he made a name for himself with his impressive battle scenes, military portraits, and historical episodes (ranging from the Napoleonic campaigns to the Russo-Japanese War). A recipient of the Academy’s Gold Medal, he traveled extensively throughout Europe (including a stay in Rome, as evidenced by an inscription dated 1913). His works are on display in prestigious Russian and European museums.
