Brief Biography
• Born on October 30, 1810, in Bruges.
• Trained by his uncle (a decorator and restorer) and briefly at the academy, then under the landscape painter Auguste van de Steene. He worked primarily independently, studying nature.
• Beginning in 1833, he settled in Brussels and exhibited regularly at Belgian art salons (Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels, Kortrijk, Liège, etc.) as well as abroad.
• He painted views of the Bruges area and Flanders, wooded and rural landscapes, and farms, sometimes featuring figures (shepherds, fishermen, etc.). His style is characterized by sincere realism: broad, light brushstrokes and natural colors, without excessive romantic idealization. He is considered one of the earliest representatives of modern realism in Belgian landscape painting.
• He worked on commission, notably for the Duke of Arenberg, for whom he painted views of the family estates.
• He died on August 26, 1842, in Brussels, at the age of only 32.
