Tivoli, with its mixture of ancient temples and grandiose nature, its picturesque location and easy access from Rome, was part of the fixed tour program of the Grand Tour travelers, and was painted and drawn from the 17th to the 20th century by all the important artists working in Italy. Many "grand tourists" wanted to take home the souvenir of the Temple of the Sibyl, spectacularly situated above one of the three waterfalls. Since they could not yet buy a postcard or point their camera at the scene themselves, the artists, many of whom also traveled to Italy, had a wonderful outlet and tried to outdo each other by creating ever more beautiful works. The landscape painter and globetrotter Carl Wuttke, who regularly traveled to the United States, China, and Egypt, was no exception. His view of Tivoli, wonderfully airy and filled with light, is in no way inferior to the works of his famous predecessors.
