Giovanni March – Still Life With Vegetables And Earthenware – 1967

Giovanni March – Still Life with Vegetables and Earthenware – 1967
An interesting still life by the Livorno-based painter Giovanni March, painted in oil on canvas and dated 1967 on the back.
The painting depicts a refined composition of household objects and produce, arranged on a dark surface: a large white soup tureen with a lid occupies the center of the scene, flanked by a covered flask, a serving stand with vegetables, artichokes, carrots, onions, and a lemon in the foreground.
The work stands out for its compositional balance and its distinctive chromatic sensitivity, achieved through a palette of subdued and harmonious tones. The grays and browns of the background enhance the delicate whites of the earthenware and the greens of the vegetables, while small accents of yellow and red lend vibrancy to the whole.
The painting, characterized by concise brushstrokes and a refined exploration of tonal relationships, reflects a personal interpretation of the 20th-century Tuscan and Livorno figurative tradition.
The composition, simple only at first glance, reveals a remarkable attention to the distribution of forms, light, and the textural rendering of the objects.
Signed lower left and dated 1967 on the reverse.
The painting is presented in a beautiful period frame made of wood gilded with pure gold, which particularly enhances the composition.
