Please note: Since the watch was opened for inspection, the original water resistance guarantee cannot be certified beyond resistance to splashes and rain. For everyday use only; do not submerge.
A contemporary, easy-to-wear watch. It embodies the hallmarks of the House of Cartier in a simple and discreet design, suitable for both everyday wear and formal attire. The inclusion of the original case, inner box, and certificate and warranty booklet—all complete—is an asset for both resale and preservation.
History & Style
The Tank was created in 1917 by Louis Cartier, who—in keeping with the House’s tradition—drew inspiration from the top view of the Renault FT tanks deployed on the front lines. Two lateral struts, integrated into the case, frame the dial: the strictly geometric design broke with the round watches of the era. The first example was presented to General Pershing in 1918, and the model was added to the catalog in 1919.
The more recent Tank Anglaise revisits this principle with an adaptation: here, the side rails extend into the case, which features softer lines and rounded corners. The dial retains the Maison’s iconic elements: Roman numerals, a railway-track minute scale, sword-shaped blued steel hands, and a winding crown set with a cabochon. The two-tone steel and yellow gold bracelet—known as “bicolore” in Cartier’s vocabulary—is a combination that the House has widely popularized since the 1980s.
The Tank has been worn for over a century without ever needing a redesign: its continued presence in the catalog and its place in the collections of several watch museums make it one of the defining models of the 20th century.
