The Poetry of the Moment in the Romantic Period

Romanticism brought a new sensibility to art: an appreciation of spontaneity, immediate emotion and the beauty of the fleeting moment.

The sketch, long regarded primarily as a preparatory stage towards a finished work, acquired an aesthetic value of its own. Non finito, the apparent incompleteness that allows the artist’s hand to remain visible, came to be appreciated for its freedom, freshness and ability to capture an impression.

This delightful Austrian miniature, executed around 1830–1840 in the circle of Carl von Saar, beautifully illustrates this evolution in artistic taste.

The portrait depicts a young man with curly hair, dressed in a brown coat and a white shirt with a loosely open collar. His face, delicately modelled in shades of pink and bluish tones, stands out against a dark landscape painted with remarkable freedom of brushwork.

The contrast between the delicacy of the expression and the almost sketch-like treatment of the background gives the composition a distinctive presence. The brushstrokes remain visible, the forms of the landscape dissolve into the atmosphere, while the sitter’s gaze retains all its intensity.

This freedom of execution does not necessarily indicate an unfinished work: rather, it reflects a new aesthetic in which spontaneity of gesture and freshness of impression became qualities valued in their own right.

Painted in watercolour and presented beneath convex glass, the miniature is preserved in its elegant gilt-brass frame, with a reverse covered in red velvet.

A captivating testimony to Romantic sensibility, in which the art of portrait miniature meets the freedom of the sketch and the poetry of the fleeting moment.
