Aedicule with a panel painting from the early 17th century. Central Italy.
This panel painting from the central-southern school is framed by a sumptuous aedicule made of gilded and carved wood and papier-mâché, embellished with twisted columns decorated with plant motifs, while cherubs are depicted at both the top and bottom. The work depicts a sacred scene: the central figure is the Sorrowful Virgin Mary, with her hands clasped in prayer and her chest pierced by seven swords symbolizing the sorrows that have afflicted her soul. The Virgin Mary is shown elevated on clouds and surrounded by cherubs. On either side of the Virgin are depicted, on the left, Saint Benedict of Norcia in dark monastic robes, and on the right, Saint Scholastica, recognizable by her nun’s habit and the flaming heart held to her chest.
