Late 18th Century Large Neoclassical Painting
Refined and unique painting on canvas, created using
the ancient "succo d’erba" (grass-juice) technique,
which employs plant-based pigments, housed within a carved wooden frame. The
work depicts a scene with a classical atmosphere: various figures are gathered
on a sumptuous terrace, which offers a view of a distant landscape. Also
visible are a mosaic floor, a pitcher, and a column adorned with floral
garlands. Inscribed on this column are the Latin acronym "SPQR"
(standing for the Roman Republic) and the name "Metellus", a
reference to an influential family from the late Roman Republic (circa 1st
century BC), along with a date below. At the center of the scene, a man dressed
in a toga, his head encircled by a golden laurel wreath, addresses three women;
the women, dressed in classical attire with flowers in their hair, listen
intently. Particular attention is also given to the balustrade of the bench,
which features an animal-themed decorative motif. This piece belongs to the
context of the "Grand Tour," drawing upon themes from the classical
and Pompeian eras, subjects that were extensively studied and revived during
that period. It is a work of great taste and sophistication, capable of adding
a touch of class and antiquity to any interior. Italian craftsmanship,
Neoclassical period, circa the late 18th century.
