A Wooden Stool Carved From Precious Wood In The Bamboo Style. China, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong–jiaqing Period.

Artist: Qianlong
A rare, large-sized sellette with particularly elegant proportions.
Since the height is unusual and the cabinetmaker wished to preserve the narrow profile of a traditional sellette, the four legs were carved to curve slightly outward to ensure greater stability for the entire piece. This feature is, moreover, perfectly in harmony with the natural curves of bamboo.
This type of furniture, whose legs mimic bamboo stalks, is extremely rare and was particularly prized by Chinese scholars, especially in the 18th century.
The Palace Museum in Beijing holds in its collections a similarly carved armchair, dating from the Qianlong-Jiaqing period, circa 1750–1800. The cabinetmaking is identical to that of our armchair and was likely executed in the same workshop.

Dimensions: H. 130 cm; W. 33 cm.

Condition: Good condition, complete. Beautiful patina. The lower crossbars were reinforced at a later date with iron elements.

We have the museum reference documents available, but we are not authorized to reproduce them here.
