Philippe Rouart 1904–1993 Wall Fountain, Polychrome Earthenware, Featuring A Gazelle, Art Deco, Orientalist Style
Antique wall fountain made of polychrome glazed earthenware, created by Philippe Rouart (1904–1993), circa 1940–1950.
This fountain features a gazelle with long, ringed horns, modeled in high relief, its head tilted toward a semicircular basin.
The animal, rendered in shades of yellow ochre, stands out against a background decorated with stylized trees, foliage, and flowers.
The composition is framed by geometric motifs in cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and orange enamels, inspired by Oriental motifs, in the spirit of mid-20th-century decorative arts.
The lower basin features a radiating design of broad cobalt blue bands separated by white lines and punctuated by turquoise triangular motifs.
Philippe Rouart (1904–1993), born into a family of artists and collectors, was a French ceramicist whose creations included decorative pieces, animal subjects, and holy water fonts in polychrome earthenware.
Signed “Ph. Rouart” on the bottom of the basin.
