19th-century Walking Cane, Gothic Style, Human Skull & Spider, Napoleon III, Vanity
Antique cane measuring 81 cm in height;
This model features a shaft made of medlar wood, a wood traditionally prized for its strength and its naturally knotty, irregular appearance. The shaft is topped with a metal ferrule.
The pommel, carved and patinated in shades of brown, depicts a human skull surmounted by a large spider.
The iconography combining the skull and the spider falls within the tradition of the memento mori and the macabre novelty items that were in vogue in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries.
With its sculpted design and decorative character, this cane could also be reminiscent of certain Japanese pieces produced for export.
