Jules Félix Coutan (1848–1939)
  • Jules-Félix Coutan won the Prix de Rome in 1872 and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon beginning in 1876.
  • He is particularly renowned for his large-scale architectural decorations and his classically inspired allegorical bronzes (such as the pediment of Grand Central Terminal in New York or various public commissions in France).
  • Charles Martial Bernard came from a dynasty of jewelers.

Around 1864, he founded the Chambre Syndicale de la Bijouterie with his friend Antoine Mellerio and became its president.
He participated in the 1867 World’s Fair, was appointed rapporteur, and received a bronze medal for the jewelry on display, including our brooch.

He was involved in organizing major exhibitions, was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor following the 1878 Exposition, where he served as a member of the Committee and rapporteur for the jury, he continued to oversee those in Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Paris in 1889, where he served as president of the International Jury for the jewelry section. Finally, he played an important role in organizing the exhibitions in Moscow and Chicago.
Upon his death in 1896, his son Henry (1855–1925)succeeded him. Since Henry had only one daughter, he sold the family business to the MELLERIO company in 1908.
