Mythological Painting Of Diana And Actaeon
Large framed mythological painting. Oil on canvas depicting Diana and her nymphs being surprised by Actaeon while bathing. Diana and her nymphs are shown naked, bathing in a pool in the middle of a rocky landscape surrounded by a forest. The goddess, leaning on a rock, wears a crescent-shaped diadem, her symbol. Two of her companions try to shield her from Actaeon's sight, covering her with a cloth. Actaeon is accompanied by two of his dogs. On the left of the painting, a pack of dogs is seen devouring a human with stag antlers on his head, a reminder of the punishment Actaeon suffers for seeing the goddess naked. Artwork dimensions: 108 x 85 cm. Framed dimensions: 125 x 99 cm. Unsigned. Circa late 17th century. Good overall condition with old restorations and some rubbing on Actaeon.
