Chalice, Neoclassical-style Silver Chalice France XIX Siecle
A neoclassical-style silver chalice, crafted using repoussé and chasing techniques, consisting of three components joined by screws.
It rests on a circular, ogee-molded base, adorned with three rosettes and a rope-pattern frieze that accentuates a domed platform. This platform features a radiant cross and is richly decorated with finely engraved Eucharistic motifs—ears of wheat, grapevine tendrils, and reeds—set within openwork frames.
The stem incorporates an ovoid knop embellished with lanceolate leaves, flanked by beaded rings and collars. It supports a cup—gilded on the inside—that flares toward the rim.
950/1000 silver.
"Rooster" hallmark (1798–1809) on the cup.
Paris guarantee hallmark on the base of the chalice.
Maker’s mark: Louis-Jacques Berger, Paris, circa 1800 (for the cup).
Maker’s mark: Jean-François Mezard, active in Paris during the same period (for the base).
The chalice is therefore likely the result of the work of two different silversmiths.
The chalice is accompanied by a silver-gilt paten, engraved with the monogram IHS 950/1000 silver, Parisian workmanship from the 18th century. It adapts perfectly to the chalice shape.
