Jean Sala : “the Letter”
Jean Sala(1869–1918) : “The Letter,” pastel on paper, 25 × 20 cm, mounted in a beautiful period gilded frame, 30 × 25 cm.
A virtuoso portraitist and genre painter whose talent earned him a bronze medal at the 1900 World’s Fair, this Barcelona native settled in Paris in the early 1890s and began signing his work “Jean” instead of “Juan.”
In our painting, where a folding screen, vases, and fine furniture suggest a bourgeois interior, the light from a lampshade resting on the writing desk gently caresses a pensive young woman contemplating the letter she has just opened, whose envelope has just fallen to the floor…
Is it a love letter—or, on the contrary, a breakup letter?
Signed and dated Paris.
