Minuscula – Museum – Set Of Two Carved Boxwood Straw Splitter – Folk Art

Late 19th century

Massif Central, France

A rare and exquisite set of two small straw-splitting tools made of carved boxwood, a remarkable example of folk art and traditional craftsmanship from the Massif Central in the late 19th century.

These small tools were used to split strands of straw lengthwise into thin strips, primarily for use in straw marquetry. The central point was used to grip the strand, which was then split as it passed between the splitter’s various blades.

Particularly interesting for their folk art character, the two examples are distinct from one another and attest to the genuine care taken in the manufacture of these otherwise strictly functional tools.

Their handles and blades feature a variety of incised and carved geometric designs.

Despite their extremely small size, they display particularly meticulous carving, even on the very thin blades used to split the straw.

This attention to decoration transforms these modest work tools into true small works of folk art, in which their utilitarian function is complemented by a particularly endearing aesthetic sensibility.

Both splitters are preserved in perfect condition and retain their very fine splitting blades.

The pairing of these two antique examples, which differ in shape and decoration, forms a particularly interesting set for the study of small traditional tools associated with straw work and rural crafts in the Massif Central.

A rare set of small traditional tools, straddling the line between utilitarian objects, artisanal craftsmanship, and folk art.

Condition: In perfect condition. Both pieces have retained their very fine splitting blades. Beautiful antique patina on the boxwood.
