Antique Swedish 835 Silver Judaica Tzedakah Charity Box Pushke Hebrew 763g 19thc

Swedish Handmade 835 Silver Jewish Charity Box (Pushke), Hebrew Inscription, 763g

A finely handcrafted Swedish 835 silver Jewish charity box (pushke), raised on three cast guardian lion feet with a matching lion-form thumbpiece mounted to the hinged lid. The cylindrical body is richly decorated with hand-chased repoussé acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage, and floral ornament in high relief, reflecting traditional Scandinavian silversmithing.

The smooth central reserve is engraved in Hebrew with the inscription “צדקה תציל ממות” (Tzedakah Tatzil MiMavet), translating as “Charity delivers from death,” a well-known biblical quotation from Proverbs 10:2 and a traditional inscription found on Jewish charity boxes.

The domed hinged lid is decorated with finely chased foliate ornament and incorporates a horizontal coin slot, allowing the vessel to function as a synagogue or domestic charity box. A side-mounted locking clasp secures the lid.

The underside bears the stamps “835”, “HANDARBEIT” (German for handmade), and the production number “16”. The clasp additionally carries decorative “84” and “1868” stamps in the Imperial Russian style; these are decorative historical motifs rather than official Russian silver hallmarks.

The piece weighs approximately 763 grams and measures 16 cm high and approximately 16 cm wide overall including the handle.

Condition

Excellent antique condition with light surface wear commensurate with age and use. The hinged lid operates correctly, the repoussé decoration remains crisp, and the Hebrew inscription is clear and legible. No significant dents, repairs, or structural damage observed. Hallmarks remain clearly struck.
