Antique Painting Oil On Canvas French School XVIII Century Original
Oil on canvas. French school of the second half of the 18th century.
Probably the work of a follower of Claude Joseph Vernet (1714–1789), a French painter who specialized in seascapes and who frequently depicted scenes of storms and shipwrecks.
The scene is set on a rocky coastline, near a village perched on the cliff above; a violent storm is raging, with a bolt of lightning streaking down from the upper right, striking some frightened figures of travelers and heading toward the sailing ship at the mercy of the fierce waves.
The sky is heavy with dark clouds, though in the distance a patch of blue already seems to be breaking through.
Restored and re-stretched, the painting is presented in a period-style frame.
