Large Carved Wooden Tabletop Crucifix, Baroque Style, 17th–18th Century
Table crucifix made entirely of carved wood, featuring a beautiful Baroque composition and an antique patina.
Christ on the cross, with slender proportions, is depicted with his head bowed and his legs together. The arms, carved separately and then attached to the body, were reattached at some point in the past.
The cross features molded crossbars with ends adorned with carved reliefs. It rests on a remarkable, richly carved Baroque pedestal, adorned with symmetrical volutes, plant motifs in relief, and a central medallion. The entire piece sits on a flat base with slightly scalloped edges.
The surface features a dark polychrome finish, with extensive wear, areas where the finish is missing, and traces of previous repairs, all bearing witness to its history.
