Jb Carpeaux, *the Spirit Of Dance*, H53 Cm, Bronze, 19th Century
Artist: Jean-baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875)
Bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting The Genius of Dance by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875).
This "Genie of Dance" is one of the elements comprising a stone group commissioned for the façade of the Opéra Garnier in 1865, titled "La Danse."
The genie, raising a tambourine, dances, accompanied by a smiling putto at his feet.
This high-quality cast-iron sculpture bears the signature "J.B. Carpeaux" on the terrace, as well as the official stamps of the artist’s studio: the "Propriété Carpeaux" stamp and the stamp featuring an eagle.
Unlike most 19th-century sculptors, who entrusted the production of their works to commercial foundries, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux made the innovative choice to establish and manage his own foundry in Auteuil beginning in 1869.
These stamps guarantee that this is an edition cast and chiseled under the direct supervision of the artist or by his immediate family (1870–1881).
