Pair Of Satsuma Vases From The Meiji Period, 19th Century

Pair of Satsuma vases from the Meiji period

A beautiful pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases, dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912), adorned with a rich polychrome design enhanced by finely executed gilding. The oval-shaped bodies feature meticulously painted scenes depicting Japanese warriors and their attendants, dressed in richly ornamented traditional costumes, against a delicately speckled background. The vases are adorned with richly decorated gilded friezes, domed lids topped with sculptural animal-shaped handles, and elaborate side handles depicting fantastical creatures. They rest on ornamental feet and exemplify the refined craftsmanship and sumptuous decorative style characteristic of Meiji-period Satsuma ware.
