Description

A rare 15th-century Austrian Gothic wooden sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary Enthroned with the Infant Jesus. The Virgin Mary, crowned, holds the Infant Jesus in her left arm. In her right hand, she probably originally held a scepter or a lily, which is now missing.

The sculpture displays the stylistic characteristics typical of Austrian statuary from the late Middle Ages. The drapery with its elegantly undulating folds, the slender proportions, the serene expression on the face, and the delicately sculpted hair are characteristic of Gothic depictions of the Virgin in the 15th century. The preservation of a significant portion of the original polychromy and gilding further enhances the work’s historical and artistic value.
