Monumental Slit Drum Head, Vanuatu, Ambrym Drum, Oceanic Art, Totem, 195 Cm
Head of a very large slit drum from Vanuatu. Slit drums from the island of Ambrym are still used today to communicate within villages and to provide the rhythm for traditional dances on the dance floor known as “Nasara.” A reconstruction is on display at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, featuring slit drums from the same village. These majestic forms, typical of Ambrym Island, have made these totem drums one of the most powerful symbols of this region of the South Pacific. The stylized face evokes the curved tusks of pigs (a symbol of prosperity). Totem sculpture for indoor display, mounted on a pedestal. Signs of wear. Approx. 195 x 45 x 48 cm / €3,800, including pedestal and shipping within France.
