A large mask made of wicker and wood, known as a “gable” mask, commonly hung above the gable of one of the two entrances or near one of the openings or “windows” of the men’s house. These masks are intended to protect the tribe from illness, bad luck, and so on. They symbolize the protective woman, the mother, and the head of the communal house. This mask was collected in the Blackwater area in Papua New Guinea. Woven wicker, wood, cassowary feathers, plant fibers, and natural pigments. Display stand available upon request only.
