Pewter Box Set Of Holy Oils - Louis XIV Period
Pewter box for holy oils
A remarkable liturgical chrismatory covered with a truncated conical lid topped by a Latin cross and resting on stylized lion-paw feet. This tomb-shaped casket is a fine example of religious metalwork, featuring a chiseled decoration of godron-patterned friezes and a hinged clasp adorned with foliage motifs. The front features a beautiful central medallion stamped with a fleur-de-lis bearing a cross and framed by the letters S and I.
The interior retains its plate engraved with floral rosettes, housing its two original containers with screw-on lids marked “OS” for Oleum Sanctorum (oils for catechumens) and “OI” for Oleum Infirmorum (oil for the sick, used for extreme unction). A beautiful, authentic antique collector’s item in excellent condition.
