Antique French Sub Miniature Gilt Brass Limoges Enamel Carriage Clock 1890 Cased
French Sub-Miniature Gilt Brass Limoges Enamel Carriage Clock, circa 1890
Description
An exceptional French sub-miniature carriage timepiece, circa 1890, distinguished by its finely decorated gilt-brass corniche case and four Limoges black-ground enamel panels.
The enamel decoration incorporates delicate bright-cut foliate borders together with classical and musical motifs, including lyres, flowers and classical female figures playing a lyre, giving this unusually small clock considerable decorative presence.
The clock is fitted with a mechanical movement with cylindrical escapement. The brass movement backplate is hand-engraved with serial number 305 and incorporates a directional arrow indicating the winding direction.
The case is surmounted by its original-style hinged brass carrying handle and measures approximately 7 cm (2.75 inches) in height, making it a particularly desirable sub-miniature example.
Accompanied by its fitted leather-covered travelling case with velvet-lined interior.
The clock also retains valuable provenance, including an earlier Anthony Woodburn Fine Antique Clocks invoice and catalogue documentation describing the piece and recording the same No. 305.
A charming and highly collectible late-19th-century French carriage clock combining miniature proportions, fine enamel decoration and documented provenance.
