Biography

Georges Willaume, born in Paris’s 10th arrondissement on November 11, 1876, and died on November 29, 1962, in Issy-les-Moulineaux, was a French painter, illustrator, and anarchist activist.

Willaume (sometimes written “Wuillaume”) joined the group of Internationalist Revolutionary Socialist Students in 1896–1897 and contributed to *Le Temps nouveaux*, edited by Jean Grave, providing illustrations for the magazine at least until 1912.
A painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement and influenced by Paul Signac, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905 and 1906, showcasing about ten paintings inspired by the landscapes of Daigny-par-Bazeilles in the Ardennes, where he had retired to paint. Willaume appears to have been very close to Jules Depaquit, a native of the Ardennes, who admired his art.
In 1907, one of his illustrations for *La Cravache* led to legal action: it depicted a peasant throwing a rifle, a crucifix, and other religious and military objects onto the manure heap.
Willaume was intensely involved in activist work in the Sedan region on behalf of the CGT before the outbreak of war. He was kept on file by the Sureté générale at least until 1913.
After 1918, he sold his house in Daigny, lived for a time in Nancy, then returned to Paris and continued to paint. One of his last works is dated December 1946 and depicts a Parisian landscape.
