Oil on thick paper.
XIX century

20th-century gilded wooden frame, with glass.
Academic study depicting a female head in profile, inspired by ancient Roman sculpture. The diadem and veil covering her head evoke the iconography of Roman empresses.
The head bears a striking resemblance to the marble portrait traditionally identified as Livia Drusilla, wife of Emperor Augustus, housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia. The resemblance is particularly evident in the arrangement of the hair and the characteristic wavy lock that falls over the cheekbone.
