Pipe Tomahawk, 1850–1885
North America, 19th century
Iron, wood, fabric, leather, earthenware beads, and horsehair
Provenance: Southeran Collection, with original handwritten label
Pipe tomahawk consisting of a blade with a wide cutting edge, pierced by a circular hole, and a socket decorated with geometric relief patterns. Opposite the cutting edge, the heel extends into a cylindrical socket. The dark wooden handle is studded with domed metal nails arranged in rows.
Its end is wrapped in green fabric, held in place by leather straps. Straps, an ornament composed of handcrafted earthenware beads in white, green, and pink, and a long tuft of horsehair complete the set.
The old handwritten label indicates separate dates for the components: the blade around 1850 (“Head 1850”) and the handle around 1875–1885 (“haft 1875/85”).
