Description
Large-format black marker drawing on white paper. A narrative composition in four panels, in the linear and immediate style characteristic of Haring’s drawings from the early 1980s.
In the upper left, a flying saucer emits dotted rays toward a black triangular shape. In the upper right, a group of stylized figures is running, one on the ground, with lines indicating movement. In the lower left, two figures, one of whom is leaping forward. In the lower right, a circular structure with rays and a triangle pattern.
Signed “K. Haring ’81” in the lower right corner.
On the reverse, a certificate printed in blue ink titled “The Keith Haring Estate — Certificate of Authenticity,” bearing the stamp of the beaming baby and the notation “© K. Haring.” The text certifies “an original work of art by Keith Haring,” with the handwritten notes: Title Untitled, Date 1981, Dimensions (corresponding to the sheet’s measurements), Medium ink, Edition #. Signed “Julia Gruen, Executor for the Keith Haring Estate,” dated 11/12/1985.
Keith Haring, a major figure in New York graffiti and pop art, developed between 1980 and 1990 an alphabet of instantly recognizable symbols (moving figures, saucers, pyramids, energetic motifs), reproduced here in a panel composition typical of his drawings from the 1980s.
