Bronze Lighter
A two-tone (brown and gold) bronze lighter depicting a highwayman or bandit—specifically a type designed for friction matches—shown masked and armed with a pistol. Under the Ancien Régime, this crime was severely punished. In England, a robber who threatened a victim with death risked hanging; indeed, thieves could face execution there as late as 1838. In France, prior to 1789, a robber could be sentenced to the breaking wheel and fell under the jurisdiction of the provosts.
