Baluster Vase In Polychrome Cloisonné Enamel. Far East. Late 19th Century.
A very beautiful baluster vase in polychrome cloisonné enamel on metal, made in the Far East—probably Japan—and dating from the late 19th century.
Elegant and slender in form, it rests on a richly decorated, flared pedestal and features a narrow neck opening into a wide, flared rim.
It features a remarkable polychrome decoration of great ornamental richness, composed of shield-shaped medallions containing depictions of stylized dragons and fantastical birds, evoking the Eastern phoenix.
These medallions are surrounded by delicate foliage scrolls, stylized flowers, and geometric friezes, in a beautiful harmony of red, blue, green, ivory, ochre, and brown against a dark background.
The overall design is accentuated by the fine metal partitions characteristic of this enameling technique.
The quality of its composition, the richness of its decoration, and the elegance of its proportions give this vase a truly beautiful decorative presence.
The underside features a light-colored glazed base, surrounded by a copper band.
