Mid 16th Century Tabernacle With Madonna And Child
Refined and unique tabernacle crafted from finely
carved solid walnut, featuring a central polychrome stucco relief of the
Madonna and Child mounted on a poplar wood panel. Designed in the style of an
altarpiece, the tabernacle boasts a gabled pediment and decorative carvings
typical of the Renaissance. The depiction of the Madonna and Child - specifically
the "Madonna del Latte" (Nursing Madonna) type, as she is shown about
to breastfeed the infant Jesus-is of exceptional artistic quality. Both figures
wear halos; the Madonna is portrayed in a three-quarter view, while the Child
faces almost directly forward, wearing a coral pendant around His neck. This
piece was undoubtedly created for a private commission, likely intended for a
Florentine family chapel; this is suggested by the background motif featuring
the lily-symbol of the city of Florence-encircled by the six spheres of the
Medici coat of arms. It is a work of great taste and artistic significance,
capable of adding a touch of elegance and historic charm to any setting.
Florentine craftsmanship, Renaissance period, circa mid-16th century.
