Description:
The work, a large-scale oil painting on canvas signed by Emil Maier, depicts a snow-covered mountain landscape at sunset. The work stands out for its remarkable visual impact, effectively capturing the atmosphere and the light of the setting sun. The composition is dominated by a forest of fir trees in the foreground, whose trunks and branches capture the low-angled light, rendered through dense, full-bodied brushstrokes in shades of ochre, cadmium yellow, and white. The snow cover features a dense network of long, well-defined shadows, rendered in cool tones ranging from violet to dark blue, in sharp contrast to the illuminated areas.
The background features a wide horizon line, surmounted by a sky characterized by overlapping bands of color that fade from golden yellow to purple and mauve. The brushwork is vigorous and textured, visible in the details of the vegetation and in the rendering of the atmospheric light. A widespread craquelure is visible on the surface, consistent with the period and the technique used. The work is housed in a linear frame made of natural wood.
Available with a 2 cm antique fir frame or with the original frame. The original frame bears a label inscribed with “Emil Maier fin XIX siècle.”
This label refers to the artist’s most prolific period, although in this case the painting can be dated to around 1920.
