Large Wrought-iron Hallway Lantern With Polychrome Stained-glass Panels – Circa 1900
Impressive and spectacular hanging lantern for an entryway or porch, made around 1890–1910, approximately 80 cm tall.
The lantern features rich wrought iron and patinated metalwork, composed of large symmetrical volutes, foliage, and acanthus leaves. Several applied plant motifs retain an antique golden patina, creating a particularly decorative contrast with the dark ironwork.
The central body consists of four leaded polychrome stained-glass panels. Their geometric composition combines a deep red border, green and amber glass, and large faceted yellow-amber central cabochons. The irregularities and nuances of the glass are fully revealed when the lantern is illuminated.
The upper and lower sections are particularly elaborately crafted, featuring powerful volutes topped with foliage motifs, giving the entire structure a monumental silhouette despite its balanced proportions.
The construction, the antique mechanical joints, the Neo-Baroque style, and the stained-glass technique allow us to date this lantern to around 1900.
