Achille Leonardi : “the Conviction Of Beatrice Cenci”

AchilleLeonardi (c. 1800–c. 1880): “The Condemnation of Beatrice Cenci,” oil on paper, approximately 22 × 30.5 cm (irregular), mounted on pH-neutral cardboard and mounted with a mat in a superb 19th-century gilded frame, 38 × 47cm.
Circa 1850–60, trapezoidal paper cutout, incomplete signature restored.
Very little is known about this fine Italian artist who producedhistorical paintings with a refined romantic touch; even the dates of his lifeare approximate ! And yet, when one sees the quality of the composition combined with the finesse of the brushwork—which the photos fail to capture well—he deserved greater recognition.
Our painting depicts the moment when Beatrice Cenci hears the sentence ofdeath sentence in her prison cell, surrounded by a maid and a priest, overcome with terror and despair.
I urge you to read her extraordinary biography, which would make the perfect plot for a TV series or a major film !
