An Interesting Burnished Bronze Tankard Featuring A Relief Depicting The Centauromachy – 19th
A refined lidded tankard/vessel made of finely cast and chased burnished bronze, dating to the second half of the 19th century.
The object features a complex sculptural composition: the cylindrical body is worked entirely in high relief with a dramatic depiction of the Centauromachy, showing human figures and centaurs locked in dynamic combat. The removable bronze lid is surmounted by a fully modeled sculptural group depicting the Abduction of Deianira by the centaur Nessus.
The piece is distinguished by the high quality of the chasing—evident in the anatomical details and facial features—and by a splendid original dark patina with warm bronze highlights on the high points. The base is sealed with a bronze plate secured by period screws.
Dimensions: height 37 cm, width 18 cm, depth 12 cm.
