“Saint Catherine of Alexandria ”
Oil on canvas, 95 x 70 cm

Minor losses and old restorations
Good condition for its age
Catherine of Alexandria was a 4th-century Christian martyr. Her feast day is celebrated on November 25. Her veneration spread throughout Europe beginning in the 6th century, reaching a peak of fervor between the 10th and 12th centuries. She is counted among the auxiliary saints and is invoked against sudden death. Some historians have questioned the historical accuracy of her story.
Although her historical existence has been doubted by some within the Catholic Church since 1961, she remains listed (stripped of legendary accounts) in the Roman Martyrology under the designation “memoria” (optional memorial).
