The Preaching Of St. John The Baptist – Antique Oil On Canvas, In A Period Frame
Large French oil painting on canvas from the late 1600s to early 1700s depicting the Sermon of St. John the Baptist in the Desert, a sacred scene set in a vast Arcadian landscape.
At the center of the composition stands the figure of John the Baptist, half-naked and draped in the traditional camel-skin cloak, in the act of baptizing a kneeling penitent. Surrounding him is a lively group of figures: on the left, two elderly men in conversation, wrapped in red and ochre cloaks, and several figures seated in an attitude of contemplation and penance; on the right, a group of women in draped robes, including a mother cradling her child to her breast, and a young man in old-fashioned attire observing the scene.
