Large Japanese Bronze Incense Burner In The Shape Of A Crab - Brown Patina
Large Japanese bronze incense burner with a brown patina, depicting a crab with outstretched legs and powerful, curved claws.
This piece, with a wingspan of 29 cm, stands out for its expressive silhouette and the delicacy of its details. The carapace features delicately chiseled decoration, combining reliefs, dots, and undulating lines. The protruding eyes, serrated claws, and fine striations evoking the bristles on the legs attest to the care taken in its execution.
The underside of the animal is also intricately crafted, featuring a detailed rendering of the abdominal segments and anatomical details.
A removable, openwork lid, fitted with a rounded handle, fits into the upper part of the carapace and allows incense smoke to diffuse. This object thus combines the function of an incense burner with an original sculptural presence.
The brown patina, enlivened by golden-brown hues on the reliefs, highlights the richness of the modeling and carving.
Antique Japanese piece; exact date to be confirmed. There is a red-painted inscription inside the body, which has not been deciphered.
