Post-cubist School (1960s) - The Spirit Of Cézanne

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas.

- Cézanne did not discover nature in Aix-en-Provence: he dismantled it to rebuild it from its very core. When he set up his easel facing Sainte-Victoire and set out to depict reality “through the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone,” he was not invoking a mere aesthetic theory, but a destructive prophecy. He dismantled the artifice of Renaissance perspective—that convenient optical illusion that had lulled the Western eye for centuries—and cast a spell whose shockwave ultimately shattered the pictorial plane under the impetus of Braque and Picasso.

This landscape pays a vibrant and daring tribute to that very heresy. Here, Provence is no longer merely contemplated; we hear it cracking: the village houses, the ochre roofs, and the Mediterranean vegetation fracture into a mosaic of faceted planes where space folds back in on itself. Light ceases to be a fleeting atmospheric phenomenon and becomes a pure structure—an architecture of geometric brushstrokes and sharp contours that capture the earth’s vibration. Finally freed from the shackles of scholarly mimesis, form breaks free, reminding us that the true triumph of Cubism was not to intellectualize art, but to restore to painting the brutal, almost shamanic power to reorder the world as it sees fit.
