19th-century Pocket Percussion Pistol, "fist Gun" Or "chest Pistol," Circa 1840
Artist: Non Signé
Small 19th-century percussion pocket pistol, also often called a “fist-sized” pistol or a “chest pistol.” This civilian defense weapon originated in the mid-19th century (during the July Monarchy and the Second Empire); this firearm uses a mercury fulminate percussion cap firing system placed in the chamber to ignite the black powder. Its beautiful guilloché-engraved octagonal steel barrel is typical of this era. The motif within the oval cartouche above the serial number depicts a stylized fleur-de-lis (or plant motif/palmette). It is also a civilian travel pistol, produced on a semi-industrial basis—a curiosity from the reign of Louis-Philippe—with minor antique restoration on the sides of the walnut grip for this collector’s item and display piece.
